Childhood inspiration: There’s something about Marilyn

Happy Friday everyone! Sometimes instead of making and doing stuff, I’m quite happy to just look at pretty things that make me happy. And Marilyn Monroe sure is pretty. And pretty fascinating.

I started a life long love affair with Marilyn Monroe when I was a little girl. I remember one of my big sisters bringing home a book from the school library that contained the most lovely photos of Marilyn. I thought she was the most beautiful thing I had even seen (I may have stolen the book). I lived in a small town outside of Palmerston North and there really wasn’t anything beautiful or fascinating to write home about at all. Looking for the pretty; that was me as a kid.

It wasn’t until a few years later that I saw my first Marilyn movie – I think it was Monkey Business with Cary Grant – that I fell in love with Marilyn the Movie Star. And boom! I had to see every movie and read every book about her.

These days I own a modest collection of books and movies that I gaze at from time to time, still with that childlike fascination and wonder. There’s just something about her.

Below are some of my favourite pictures taken by the photographer Sam Shaw and others.

Who did you idolise in your childhood?
